What are blackheads?
Blackheads are small dark lesions that appear on the surface of the skin, most often on the nose. Medically they are open comedones: follicles with a wider than normal opening, which is what makes the pore look enlarged. Whiteheads are usually smaller and are closed comedones. Oil and dead skin clog the pore, and the skin seals over the top.
They are not black because they are dirty. The debris inside the pore has been exposed to air and oxidised, which darkens it. Closed comedones stay white because they are sealed.
